Rare Earth Race · Country Briefing

Thailand's 4,800-tonne estimate cannot be tied to a named mine.

The estimate equals about 1.2% of 2025 world mine output and comes from Chinese import records, not published Thai mine returns. Thailand's clearest operating asset is a 1,800-tonne-a-year magnet-powder plant, a different production step with no matching global total.

Thailand's clearest rare earth asset is a factory, not a mine. Magnequench's Korat plant has 1,800 tonnes a year of disclosed capacity for neodymium iron boron powder and compounds used in magnets. By contrast, the USGS estimate of 4,800 tonnes of Thai mine output in 2025 comes from Chinese import records and cannot be matched to a named audited operation. 8 1

Kabin Buri could widen the processing role. Its current plan targets 12,000 tonnes a year of mixed rare-earth chloride made mainly from imported African monazite, with ownership and licence changes still pending. It would not prove that Thailand mined the feed or separated individual dysprosium and terbium oxides. 9 We expect imported-feed processing to grow faster than transparent domestic mining through 2030. The national production estimate may be revised again unless regulators publish mine names, grades and contained output. Thailand can become a more useful manufacturing link even while its ranking as a miner remains provisional.

The numbers

The mine-output number in context

USGS 2025 estimates cover total rare earth oxide equivalent. The chart does not measure refining or magnet output.

Leading mine producers

World share and tonnes, 2025 estimate
China 270,000 tonnes · 69.2% of world
United States 51,000 tonnes · 13.1% of world
Australia 29,000 tonnes · 7.4% of world
Myanmar 22,000 tonnes · 5.6% of world
Thailand 4,800 tonnes · 1.2% of world
Every rail runs from 0% to 100% of world mine output. The label also gives tonnes. World total: about 390,000 tonnes in 2025; trade-derived estimates can be revised.

USGS estimates 4,800 tonnes of Thai mine output for 2025, equal to many times the combined estimate for Malaysia and Vietnam. 1 All three national estimates come from China's import data rather than audited mine returns, which leaves the bar-chart comparison without firm footing.

The prior-year revision is large enough to change a trend. USGS commodity summary 2025 had put Thailand's 2024 output at 3,000 tonnes. 2 The USGS commodity summary 2026 edition revised the same period to 2,100 tonnes. That lower base makes the new 4,800-tonne estimate look even steeper.

Reserve reporting moved in the other direction, from 4,500 tonnes in the 2025 USGS edition to "not available" a year later. 2 1 That label means the evidence is unavailable rather than a country with no rare earth occurrence.

Small-mine growth or recovery from old tin streams could raise exports. Customs totals can also shift when inventory moves or material is re-exported. Those explanations remain hypotheses until a concession-level mass balance links ore grade to product and border record.

The most quotable Thai number is also the least attributable. A mine name would improve it more than another decimal place.

What the numbers say

Thailand's DMR describes monazite and xenotime in onshore or offshore tin tailings across the south. The same heavy-mineral assemblages occur near granite or gneiss in provinces including Ranong and Phuket. 4 Historical waste can reduce fresh stripping, though variable grade and ownership complicate a restart.

The Western Belt's S-type granitoids provide a second route because DMR research identifies them as favorable hosts for tin-tungsten-rare earth systems. Tropical weathering can concentrate rare earth minerals or adsorb ions on clay. 3 A favorable host is an exploration filter rather than an economic reserve.

Work at Ranong and Takua Pa found enriched rare earths in altered granite or separated kaolinite, including heavier elements. 5 Those samples justify follow-up drilling and leach tests, but a production forecast still needs thickness and recovery. Land access would then decide whether that forecast can become a project.

Jarin in Kanchanaburi adds monazite or xenotime as accessory minerals in a tin setting. 6 By-product recovery may improve an existing mine's economics, but an accessory grain does not become carbonate ready to sell by appearing under a microscope.

Neo Performance Materials disclosed 1,800 tonnes a year of NdFeB powder or compound capacity at Magnequench Korat in its 2022 annual information form. 8 Three melt-spinning jet casters place the site between metals and bonded magnet components, which is a real manufacturing position even without a mine.

NdFeB powder can feed bonded magnets, while a customer-approved sintered magnet follows a different pressing and heat-treatment route. A chart that calls all 1,800 tonnes finished magnets would skip the customer's most demanding steps.

Using imported African monazite, Hastings' Kabin Buri proposal doubled its design in July 2026 to 10,000 tonnes a year of feed. The plan also targets 12,000 tonnes of gross mixed chloride, with first output due in the first quarter of 2027. 9 Mixed chloride at a stated 45% total rare-earth oxide can weigh more than its feed because reagents and water become part of the product.

The company was still finalizing its 49% acquisition and revised transaction documents, with licence amendments also pending. 9 Only a commercial shipment should move the plant into the operating column, because early trial production can make a few drums long before a customer accepts steady chemistry.

Washington and Bangkok signed a critical-minerals memorandum of understanding in October 2025 covering governance and mapping. Investment cooperation also sits inside the same framework for both governments. Either side may discontinue it, and the text grants no mine right. 10 Thailand's government later stressed that normal environmental review and consultation still apply. 11

The agreement can improve geological evidence or project finance, but it cannot turn a DMR map into production. A funded survey and reserve statement would be measurable progress; another ministerial meeting belongs in the policy timeline.

Water has become the sharper public issue after Reuters reported arsenic in the Kok River, alongside signatures of dysprosium and terbium. China-backed mines farther along the rivers in Myanmar were identified as the source of concern. 13 Thai task forces monitored the damage while farmers shifted away from river irrigation.

The Associated Press documented the wider fear around fish and food exports in April 2026. 14 Those impacts belong on a Thailand page because the costs reach Thailand through the rivers. They should be labelled as cross-border pollution rather than evidence against a named Thai mine.

What to watch through 2030

These are dated editorial predictions, not company guidance or investment advice. Each includes the evidence that would force a rethink.

Across USGS commodity summary editions 2027 to 2030

Thailand's output estimate moves by more than 20%.

USGS revises at least one Thailand annual mine-output estimate by more than 20% between successive vintages. The same 2024 estimate moved from 3,000 to 2,100 tonnes in one year, while the reserve field disappeared. A customs proxy stays exposed until Thailand publishes mine-level output. 2 1

ConfidenceHigh
What would change this view

Lower confidence if Thailand publishes named-mine contained-rare-earth oxide data reconciled to customs. This forecast is wrong if the USGS 2030 commodity summary does not revise any annual estimate by more than 20%.

By 31 December 2027

Kabin Buri ships material made mostly from African feed.

Kabin Buri makes its first commercial mixed rare-earth chloride shipment, predominantly from imported African feed. The latest filing gives a plant design and contracted feed route, though acquisition completion and licence amendments still gate construction. 9

ConfidenceMedium
What would change this view

Revise on transaction close and the amended licence. This forecast is wrong if the plant is cancelled, relocated or ships nothing by the deadline.

Through 31 December 2030

No named Thai mine exceeds 1,000 tonnes.

Thailand has no named domestic rare earth mine reporting more than 1,000 tonnes of rare-earth oxide in a calendar year. DMR shows real occurrences, but the current national production estimate has no matching operator or reserve. The visible industrial projects use imported feed or external alloy inputs. 3 1

ConfidenceMedium
What would change this view

Revise when a concession publishes a reserve, environmental review and funded construction plan. This forecast is wrong if audited mine output rises above 1,000 tonnes of rare-earth oxide.

Method and evidence

What the numbers mean

Production confidence
Thailand's USGS output is displayed as a Chinese-import estimate. It is not assigned to a mine unless an operator or regulator reports contained production. 1
Imported feed
Kabin Buri's planned African monazite is reported as Thai processing rather than Thai mining. Mixed rare-earth chloride gross tonnes are kept separate from contained rare-earth oxide. 9
Cross-border pollution
Kok and Mekong impacts are attributed to reported Myanmar or Laos sources farther along the rivers. They are not presented as evidence about a domestic Thai project. 13 14
