Strategic metal

AntimonySmall additions. Demanding applications.

Antimony changes how materials perform in flame retardants, battery alloys and selected defence applications. Its investment case depends on how manufacturers respond when concentrated supply becomes harder to access.

Antimony in detail

Antimony (Sb) is a brittle metalloid used primarily in industrial formulations where small additions materially change performance, especially flame-retardant systems, lead-based battery alloys, and selected defence and electronics applications.

For investors, antimony tends to behave like a “policy-sensitive” minor metal: the market is comparatively small, supply is geographically concentrated, and trade controls have recently translated into large spot-price moves.

China's antimony power is much larger at the refinery than at the mine.

China mined 36.4% of world antimony in 2025 but accounted for about 74% of refining. Russia is the closest mine alternative; Australia's Hillgrove restart is not yet counted as output.

Why Invest in Antimony?

What keeps drawing me back to antimony is that the story is not just theoretical. It matters because the metal is genuinely useful, but also because the supply chain looks fragile enough to keep prices sensitive. U.S. apparent consumption jumped sharply in 2025, while net import reliance was estimated at 91%, which tells you how dependent the market still is on outside supply.

Trade controls have already shown how quickly that can feed through to pricing. China’s export restrictions in August 2024, followed by its ban on exports to the United States in December 2024, helped drive a sharp move higher. Prices later corrected as some easing and fresh supply responses came through, but the market does not look like it has simply gone back to where it was before.

The market seems to have tested some substitution since the 2025 spike, which helps explain part of the correction. But substitution only goes so far. In higher-value areas such as infrared systems, night vision, and ammunition, that gets much harder. Once antimony is tied to performance, reliability, or defence use, it is not something manufacturers can easily swap out without consequences.

That is why antimony still looks interesting going into 2026. To me, it now looks like a market with a higher structural floor than it had before the 2024 to 2025 shock. China could still tighten conditions again, the current suspension only runs to November 2026, and sanctions elsewhere have hardly made the supply picture more comfortable.

Who produces antimony?

Approximate share of global mine production (antimony content) based on 2025e mine production totals in USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries.
The top three producers - China, Russia, and Tajikistan - account for roughly 85% of global mine output, indicating high supply concentration even before considering downstream processing chokepoints (notably antimony trioxide refining capacity).

Antimony Demand and Market Outlook

📈
Global Market Size
USD 4.1B by 2034
The global antimony market was valued at USD 2.5 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 4.1 billion by 2034, expanding at a CAGR of 5.2% during the forecast period.
🚫
Chinese Export Controls
Suspended to Nov 2026
Trade controls remain a core risk variable. China suspended its ban on exports of antimony (along with gallium and germanium) to the U.S. until November 27, 2026 - a temporary reprieve that keeps supply uncertainty elevated for importers.
🏭
U.S. Import Reliance
91% Net Import Reliant
USGS estimates 2025 U.S. net import reliance at 91% of apparent consumption - its highest level in five years. This import-heavy market structure means supply disruptions transmit quickly into domestic price and availability.
🇬🇧
UK Critical Minerals Strategy
Policy Backed
The UK's 2026 Critical Minerals Strategy lists antimony among minerals eligible for policy support as part of its "critical and growth minerals" approach, signalling growing strategic recognition beyond the U.S. and EU.
🔥
Price and Substitution Dynamics
Long-Term Bullish
Substitution in flame retardants helped push antimony prices down from their 2025 highs, but the long-term outlook remains strong due to unreliable supply chains and growing defence relevance - particularly in ammunition, night-vision equipment, and lead-acid battery applications.

A useful thesis has a question behind it.

Can industrial buyers substitute antimony if its price rises, or do their performance requirements limit that choice?
