Bismuth in detail

Bismuth is a distinctive, strategic metal valued for its non-toxicity, low melting point (~271.5 °C), and remarkable density. Widely adopted as an eco-friendly substitute for lead, it’s essential in pharmaceuticals (digestive treatments), cosmetics (pearlescent pigments), metallurgy (lead-free alloys), and electronics (low-temperature solders). Its unique thermal properties and low toxicity increasingly make it indispensable in sustainable manufacturing processes.

Global demand is accelerating as industries shift toward environmentally friendly materials and stricter regulations phase out lead-based products. However, supply constraints persist due to limited mining activity and reliance on byproduct extraction from metals like lead, copper, and tin. Recent geopolitical tensions, notably China’s tightening export controls, have spiked prices and highlighted bismuth’s vulnerability, reinforcing its appeal as a niche yet strategically promising investment.

Why Invest in Bismuth?

Bismuth is a minor but strategic metal used in stomach medicines, pigments and cosmetics, low melting fusible alloys and lead free solders, plus safety plugs, fire sprinklers and some advanced nuclear coolant and shielding alloys. Its low toxicity and density make it the default lead substitute in many regulated applications, so demand tracks OTC pharmaceuticals, personal care, lead free electronics, safety systems and some defense and nuclear uses.

Supply is tiny and dominated by China, which provides more than 80 percent of global output in a market of only tens of thousands of tons per year.

In February 2025 Beijing put bismuth and its compounds under export licensing alongside tungsten, indium, tellurium and molybdenum, which has driven European bismuth metal prices to their highest levels since 2008 and opened a large price gap between tightly controlled metal and more lightly regulated bismuth oxide.

For investors, bismuth is an extremely small, illiquid and policy sensitive market where modest changes in Chinese licensing or production can trigger violent price moves, but where the metal is gaining strategic status: it is now classed as a critical or strategic raw material in Europe and appears among targeted stockpile metals in recent US Pentagon and Defense Logistics Agency procurement plans.

Who produces bismuth?

Bismuth is a byproduct of lead, tin and tungsten smelting, and refined supply is heavily concentrated in China, with a handful of other refineries in Asia and Europe.
The percentages in this chart are rounded, illustrative values based on 2023 refinery output and are meant to show concentration, not precise trade volumes.

Bismuth Demand and Market Outlook

💡
Key Applications
Multi-Sector
Bismuth is a dense, low-toxicity metal produced almost entirely as a byproduct of lead, zinc, copper, and tin smelting. Major uses include pharmaceuticals (bismuth subsalicylate and other drugs), lead-free solders and fusible alloys, pigments and cosmetics, and specialised applications in atomic research and electronics.
🌎
US Import Dependence
100% Import Reliant
Global refined bismuth production is modest - around 20,000 tonnes per year - and highly concentrated. China provides the overwhelming majority of refinery output. The United States has had no primary production since the late 1990s and is essentially 100% import reliant, with roughly two-thirds of imports coming from China and most of the rest from the Republic of Korea.
🏗
EU Critical Material Status
EU CRMA Listed
The EU classifies bismuth as a critical raw material on its 2023 list, bringing it under the Critical Raw Materials Act. The Act targets by 2030 at least 10% of EU demand from domestic extraction, 40% from EU processing, 25% from recycling, and a 65% cap on dependence on any single non-EU supplier - a significant challenge given current reliance on Chinese refined supply.
📈
Global Market Size
+5.5-6% CAGR
The global bismuth market is valued at around US$430-450 million in 2024 and projected to reach roughly US$630-675 million by 2030, driven by growth in bismuth-based pharmaceuticals, lead-free solders and alloys, expansion in cosmetics and pigments, and wider use of bismuth compounds in catalysts and semiconductor-related applications.
China Export Controls 2025
Export Controls Active
China introduced export controls on bismuth and several other critical metals in early 2025, highlighting how strongly the market depends on Chinese refinery output. Combined with bismuth's byproduct status - meaning supply is tied to the economics of other base metals - this is pushing the EU and other importing economies to promote recycling, alternative supply projects, and long-term offtake agreements.

How to Invest in Bismuth

Bismuth is a minor metal, not traded on major exchanges and priced mainly through private contracts and specialist platforms, which makes the market opaque and often volatile.

The main indirect exposure is through diversified miners and smelters that produce bismuth as a byproduct of lead, tungsten, copper, or polymetallic ores, with China still the dominant source alongside operations in Latin America and a few refiners elsewhere. Their earnings are driven by a broad metal basket, so bismuth prices only marginally affect valuation.

Direct Invest

Direct investors can buy high purity bismuth bars or ingots from specialist technology metal dealers, some of which specifically target private investors. Because supply is concentrated and the market is small, vaulted storage in secure or bonded facilities is usually recommended to protect purity and ease resale into industrial channels.

Bismuth is valued as a low toxicity alternative to lead in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, solders, ammunition, and fusible alloys, and it is gaining roles in batteries, catalysts, and other clean tech applications, so demand is growing from a small base but liquidity remains limited and price swings can be sharp.
