Hafnium Price Trends & Forecast
Hafnium’s price trajectory has been exceptional. With demand strong and few new supplies, prices surged from a few hundred USD/kg a decade ago to several thousand today. In 2024, U.S. prices peaked around $6,000+ per kg. That year, Quest Metals reported the global market value jumping from about $396m in 2023 to over $600m in early 2024.
A slight correction occurred in 2024, but the market remains very tight. Looking ahead, most analysts expect supportive price trends. Supply is fundamentally limited by zirconium byproduct output and new mining takes years to go live. Even with some planned expansions (e.g. Framatome boosting hafnium separation in France, as well as new projects in Australia and USA), growth in supply will likely be modest.


Meanwhile, demand drivers remain robust. Nuclear power programs (needing hafnium rods) continue to grow, and the semiconductor and aerospace sectors show no sign of slowing. Any acceleration of clean-energy policies (more reactors, turbines) or AI-related infrastructure will further lift demand. At the same time, export restrictions loom. China’s 2024 export licensing regime caused a sharp drop in shipments (down around 90% in 9 months), tightening the market.
Unless alternative suppliers or recycling methods scale rapidly, prices are expected to stay structurally higher than in the past. In summary, with projections showing a widening supply and demand gap by 2030, most observers see hafnium prices remaining elevated and volatile through the decade unless major new sources emerge.
