Rare earth

HolmiumPrecision in a specialist laser market.

Holmium is used in medical lasers, optical standards and selected nuclear applications. Its narrow end markets make the product specification and the buyer's requirements as important as the broader rare-earth supply story.

Holmium in detail

Holmium is a rare, strategic metal valued for its exceptional magnetic properties and critical role in high-tech applications. It is essential in medical lasers (Ho:YAG for precision surgeries), high-strength magnets, and nuclear control rods due to its unmatched neutron absorption. With the highest magnetic moment of any element, holmium is integral to specialized scientific instruments and next-generation quantum computing research.

Despite its niche demand, holmium’s supply is tightly constrained, as it is solely extracted as a byproduct of heavy rare earth mining, predominantly in China. Geopolitical risks, potential export restrictions, and limited alternative sources contribute to its scarcity, positioning holmium as a high-potential investment within the strategic metals sector.

Why Invest in Holmium?

Holmium is a heavy rare earth technology metal used to strengthen high performance NdFeB magnets for EV motors, wind turbines and advanced industrial drives, and in holmium doped solid state and fiber lasers such as Ho:YAG systems for minimally invasive surgery and high precision cutting. It also appears in nuclear control rods and shielding, wavelength calibration glass standards for spectrophotometers, and specialty optical glasses and fibers operating around 2.1 µm, tying holmium demand to growth in electric mobility, nuclear power, precision metrology and urology and ophthalmic laser procedures.

Production, however, is small and closely linked to heavy rare earth mining and separation, where China controls most upstream supply and midstream processing capacity. Recent Chinese export control rounds have explicitly added holmium to restricted rare earth lists, with broad coverage of oxides, metals and optical materials and extraterritorial licensing rules, layering regulatory and geopolitical risk on top of basic scarcity and market opacity.

For investors, holmium therefore occupies a tight, high value niche: it is embedded in fast growing EV magnet, nuclear safety and medical laser markets, yet traded through a minuscule, concentrated and policy sensitive supply chain where price transparency is limited and liquidity thin. In short, exposure to holmium is effectively a leveraged bet on high end magnet and laser technologies, paid for with elevated concentration, intervention and pricing risk.

Who produces holmium?

Approximate share of global refined holmium supply via heavy rare earth separation. Holmium is a heavy rare earth element mostly recovered as a byproduct from ion-adsorption clays in southern China, with only small volumes separated elsewhere.
Industry and policy analysis indicates that China processes close to 99% of global heavy rare earths, giving it an effective monopoly over refined holmium supply, with only minor output reported from projects in countries such as Myanmar, Vietnam, and a handful of pilot-scale plants in the US, EU, and Australia.

Holmium Demand and Market Outlook

💡
Key Applications
Multi-Sector
Holmium's exceptional magnetic, optical, and neutron-absorbing properties make it a critical input for high-performance NdFeB permanent magnets, holmium-doped medical lasers, and nuclear reactor control rods - spanning EVs, wind power, advanced medical devices, and defense systems.
🏗
Critical Mineral Status
US 2025 Listed
The United States formally classifies holmium as a critical mineral on its 2025 List of Critical Minerals, highlighting its essential role in permanent magnets, nuclear control rods, and lasers alongside a supply chain that is vulnerable to disruption due to concentration of mining and refining outside the US.
📈
Global Market Size
+4% CAGR
The global holmium market is estimated at roughly US$35.5 million in 2025, with growth projected to around US$52.8 million by 2034 at a little over 4% CAGR, supported by rising demand in high-strength magnets, lasers, nuclear technology, and precision medical applications.
Byproduct Supply Structure
Price Sensitive
Holmium is primarily produced as a byproduct of rare earth mining, largely in China, and used to enhance the thermal stability of NdFeB magnets. This byproduct status and concentration of refining capacity create structurally tight supply driven more by broader rare earth project economics than by holmium-specific demand, leading to pronounced price sensitivity when demand spikes.
China Export Controls 2025
100% EU China Supply
China's October 2025 decision to extend export controls to holmium requires export licences for holmium-containing materials. China currently supplies 100% of the EU's heavy rare earth needs and dominates global refining, pushing the EU (under the Critical Raw Materials Act) and the US to accelerate diversification via new mining, refining, recycling projects, and long-term offtake agreements.

How to Invest in Holmium

Investing in holmium is tricky: it is not traded on major commodity exchanges or via standardized futures. Unlike gold or silver, there is no spot market, so prices are set in opaque contracts between processors, end users, and a small group of dealers, with reference to periodic oxide price quotes.

The most practical way to gain exposure is through publicly listed rare earth miners and processors such as Lynas Rare Earths and MP Materials, which produce holmium within a broader rare earth mix as part of their rare earth flows. However, their revenues are driven by the overall rare earth basket rather than holmium alone.

Direct Invest

For direct investment, acquiring high-purity holmium oxide or metal from specialist dealers is an option. Because it is used in high-strength permanent magnets, Ho:YAG medical lasers, and nuclear control rods – and holmium has one of the strongest magnetic moments of any element – professional vaulted storage is recommended for security and for meeting the specifications of industrial buyers at resale.
