Indium Price Trends & Forecast
In late 2023 and through 2024, indium prices spiked. Global markets tightened as China’s export curbs and environmental policies limited refined output, while demand remained strong in electronics, solar PV and industrial tech. Analysts observed that limited production (mostly as a zinc by-product) and stockpiling led to significant price shifts during this period. Over the first half of 2025, some softening occurred as demand growth paused, but the overall level remained high.

Looking ahead, indium’s fundamentals point to a firm market. China’s March 2025 export controls are expected to keep international supply constrained. Downstream demand drivers are robust as virtually every new smartphone, 5G base station, solar panel and high-speed chip continues to require indium or its compounds. Trade policies (such as the 25% US tariff on Chinese indium imposed in late 2024) also add friction to supply chains.
Taken together, most observers expect indium prices to stay elevated in coming years, with further upside if technology adoption accelerates. Supply is inelastic and new non-Chinese sources or recycling efforts will be needed to relieve pressure. Unless significant new production or substitutes appear, indium’s price floor looks structurally higher going forward, driven by persistent demand and geopolitical limits on supply.
