NeodymiumCompact magnets with an outsized role.

Neodymium is a foundation of permanent magnets used in motors, wind generators and electronics. The practical supply chain runs through separation, metal making and magnet manufacturing, so mine output is only one part of the picture.

Neodymium in detail

Neodymium is a critical rare earth element that serves as the backbone of high-performance permanent magnets used in electric vehicle (EV) motors, wind turbine generators, advanced robotics, and consumer electronics.

Its magnets boast an unparalleled strength-to-weight ratio, enabling compact and energy-efficient designs in everything from renewable energy systems to MRI machines and precision optics. This makes neodymium indispensable for the green technology revolution and modern electronics. Demand for neodymium has been surging alongside the growth of EVs and clean energy, yet supply remains heavily concentrated in China, which controls about 80% of global output.

Material supply at a glanceChecked through 30 August 2026

No public dataset cleanly separates neodymium from praseodymium supply.

Lynas produced 7,260 tonnes of the combined pair in FY2026. Australia's two major plant designs together list 7,740 tonnes a year, but planned capacity is not future output.

Why Invest in Neodymium?

Neodymium has already had the kind of price move that makes people think they have missed the boat. NdPr oxide started 2026 around $53 per kilogram and moved above $100 by early March, making it one of the strongest performers of the year so far. However, even after that run, there’s a strong case that prices have more room to keep on rising.

The reason is that there is a real supply story underneath it. China remains the centre of gravity in NdPr processing and magnet production, so disruptions to feedstock, constrained production growth, or shifts in policy still ripple through the market. At the same time, demand from permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, electronics and defence continues to build, while non-Chinese supply remains limited.

The NdPr market is expected to remain in supply deficit in 2026, with demand still growing faster than new supply can realistically come online. That is the kind of setup commodity investors want, because deficits tend to support prices for longer than people expect.

Once the biggest player in a strategic materials market starts tightening the system, buyers do not sit still. They build inventory, revisit sourcing plans, and pricing gets more aggressive anywhere the magnet supply chain looks exposed. My bottom line is simple: neodymium may still be a good investment in 2026 because the core ingredients are there, tight supply, durable industrial demand, and a market still shaped by Chinese production and policy decisions.

Who manufactures neodymium?

Share of refined neodymium supply (approximate). China dominates refining capacity, though diversification efforts are underway in Malaysia and the United States.
China controls ≥80% of refined neodymium. Malaysia (Lynas facility) provides ~12% and is the largest non-Chinese refiner. US capacity is emerging but remains limited.

Neodymium Demand and Price Forecast

📈
Magnet Demand Explosion
11-13x by 2050
EU analysts project that neodymium demand will increase 4-5x by 2030 and 11-13x by 2050 as clean energy technologies - wind turbines, EV motors, and industrial magnets - scale up globally.
🌞
IEA Permanent Magnet Forecast
4-7x by 2040
The International Energy Agency forecasts a 4-7 fold jump in neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium use in permanent magnets by 2040 under global climate targets, making magnet rare earths among the most demand-pressured critical minerals.
Supply Deficit Outlook
246,000t Gap by 2040
Global NdFeB magnet consumption could outstrip supply by around 60,000 tonnes per year by 2030, widening to a 246,000 tonne annual shortfall by 2040 if new sources do not materialise.
EV Motor Demand
+37% in 2024
Rare earth demand from EV motors climbed 37% year-on-year in 2024 and will continue rising through 2030 as electric vehicle adoption accelerates across major markets.
Recycling Limitations
Under 10% by 2030
Recycling of end-of-life magnets will help only marginally in the near term - expected to supply under 10% of rare earth demand by 2030 - meaning primary production must expand significantly to avoid prolonged deficits.

How to Invest in Neodymium

Investing in Neodymium presents unique challenges, as it is not traded on major commodity exchanges and lacks standardised futures contracts.

Unlike gold or silver, there is no widely available spot market, making price discovery opaque.

The most popular way to try and gain exposure is through publicly traded rare earth mining companies such as Lynas Rare Earths and MP Materials, which produce neodymium as part of a broader rare earth mix. However, their revenues are influenced by the entire rare earth market rather than neodymium specifically.

Moreover, these companies are miners whose stock price is a function of their profitability rather than underlying assets.

Direct Invest

For direct investment, acquiring high-purity neodymium oxide or metal from specialised dealers is an option. Due to its strategic importance, limited supply outside China, and price volatility, professional storage in secure vaults is recommended for safekeeping and resale. Neodymium metal is reactive and requires proper storage conditions to prevent oxidation.

As a critical material essential for high-performance magnets, electric vehicles, wind turbines, and advanced electronics, neodymium represents a compelling, though highly specialised, investment opportunity in the rare earth sector.
