Key Price Drivers

China's Dominance

China controls the bulk of neodymium mining and processing. Export quotas, tariffs, or policy shifts there can send prices soaring - or crashing.

Clean Tech Demand

The explosive growth in EVs and wind power means demand for NdFeB magnets is set to rise sharply, underpinning long-term price support.

Supply Rigidity

Neodymium is always co-produced with other rare earths. New mines and processing facilities take years to develop, limiting how quickly supply can catch up with demand.

Lack of Substitutes

High-performance NdFeB magnets offer unmatched power density. Even if prices rise, few alternatives can deliver the same performance, keeping demand inelastic.

Neodymium Price Trends & Forecast

For much of the 2010s, neodymium was a relatively under-the-radar commodity. Supply (almost entirely from China and a handful of mines elsewhere) was generally sufficient, and demand grew steadily.

This calm period changed as the world entered the 2020s. A combination of factors such as the EV sales explosion, wind power expansion, and worries about over-reliance on Chinese rare earth put upward pressure on neodymium prices. By late 2021, buyers fearing future shortages pushed the price to historic highs. The market sentiment was that neodymium had shifted from niche status to a core material for the global energy transition, and valuations adjusted accordingly.

However, 2022 and 2023 reminded investors that even critical metals can overheat. After the early-2022 peak, several developments helped cool the market. China ramped up rare earth production quotas, domestic Chinese demand for magnets temporarily eased, and Western magnet manufacturers had built up some stockpiles during the price run-up.

The result saw neodymium fall throughout 2023. This pullback was not due to any collapse in underlying demand as EV and wind deployments kept rising, but rather a short-term supply catch-up and destocking cycle.

neodymium by industry

By mid-2024, neodymium prices appeared to find a floor, and recovery signs emerged into 2025. Demand continues to grow robustly, with global EV sales hitting record highs and wind and solar installations expanding. At the same time, the world remains heavily dependent on China for refined neodymium.

This structural reality limits how low prices are likely to go. Indeed, many analysts expect neodymium will see renewed strength in the second half of the 2020s. New rare earth mining projects (in the US, Australia, etc.) are in development, but progress is slow. It takes years to build up processing capacity outside China. Recycling of neodymium from old motors and turbines will start contributing more after 2030, but in the near term it’s minimal.

Geopolitical developments remain a wildcard: any hint of export restrictions (similar to China’s 2010 ban or the gallium/germanium export licensing in 2023) could send prices climbing rapidly. Conversely, if global economic growth falters, that could temporarily soften demand for new electric cars and wind turbines, easing pressure on neodymium. In summary, investors should expect continued volatility with an upward bias – neodymium’s strategic value in the clean energy supply chain is set to keep increasing, and its pricing will reflect that strategic importance.
