25 Market Review
2025: A Year of Extraordinary Gains for Precious, Strategic, and Rare Earth Metals
The market for strategic and rare earth metals has been on a remarkable run in 2025. Prices have climbed at a pace that leaves many conventional assets behind, driven by strong demand from clean energy and high tech sectors alongside a series of supply shocks.

Magnet Metals Race Ahead
Rare Earth Magnet Complex
Neodymium, dysprosium, and terbium sit at the heart of powerful permanent magnets. By early August, neodymium had risen a little more than 21% since January to around $116 per kilogram. Dysprosium advanced roughly 29% to about $454 per kilogram, while terbium climbed more than 42% and traded near $2,000 per kilogram. Praseodymium, often paired with neodymium for magnet alloys, gained about 20% over the same stretch.

02
Supply Pinch Turns Severe
Export Controls and Processing Loss
Two forces have squeezed availability. First, Beijing introduced new export licences for seven heavy rare earth elements in April. Exports of dysprosium and terbium collapsed almost overnight. Customs records for June show just 1 kilogram of dysprosium and a little more than 1 metric ton of terbium left China, down from many tens of tonnes a year earlier. Second, environmental checks in Jiangxi Province shut key separation plants and removed roughly 15% of national processing capacity.

Buying Frenzy Among Magnet Makers
Front Loaded Demand
Major producers of permanent magnets are not waiting for shortages to ease. The five largest firms in China boosted their orders by more than 20% compared with the prior quarter and now place bookings 4 to 6 months ahead. This front loading reinforces the upward trend in prices and attracts speculators who expect further gains.

Technology Metals Join the Rally
Gallium, Germanium, Indium
Gallium, germanium, and indium, often grouped as technology metals, are also climbing. Gallium sits near $1,066 per kilogram, up about 13% this year. Germanium has leapt almost 38% to roughly $5,670 per kilogram. Indium is up a little over 10% at about $771 per kilogram. Export paperwork and outright bans on shipments to some Western destinations continue to crimp supplies of gallium and germanium, keeping buyers on edge.

Investors Shift Toward Strategic Metals
Diversification Theme
Traditional refuges have done well, but not nearly as well as the niche metals. Gold rose about 26% in the first half of the year, while platinum gained close to 47% by July. In contrast, dysprosium, terbium, and germanium delivered larger percentage moves in a matter of months. Portfolio managers looking for exposure to the clean energy transition have started to accumulate physical stocks of these metals as a diversification play.

06
Early Signs of Demand Fatigue
Margin Pressure Appears
Not every downstream sector can absorb higher costs indefinitely. Makers of magnetic materials serving consumer electronics report orders running 7% to 12% below plan. Some alloy producers say margins are shrinking because customers resist further price hikes. That pushback has not derailed the rally yet, but it adds volatility to a market that is already thinly traded.

What to Watch Next
Supply Response Will Take Time
Governments outside China are racing to build new mines and processing lines, while recycling projects in India and Europe move from pilot phase toward commercial scale. Those efforts will help, but most analysts agree meaningful new supply will take years. Until then, any change in Chinese export policy, any fresh environmental clampdown, or an unexpected surge in electric vehicle demand could trigger the next price spike. For now, strategic metals have moved from obscurity to the centre of the global shift toward cleaner energy and advanced technology.
Key Watchpoints
China Policy
Export rules remain the single most important pricing trigger.
New Supply
New mines, processing, and recycling help, but timelines remain long.
Demand Shock
A fresh EV acceleration could quickly tighten an already stressed market.
