Strategic metal

RheniumPerformance where turbine temperatures climb.

Rhenium strengthens nickel-based superalloys used in demanding turbine components and serves petroleum-refining catalysts. Recovery from the copper and molybdenum chain links this specialist material to production decisions made for other metals.

Rhenium in detail

Rhenium is an ultra-rare, high-value metal renowned for its extreme heat resistance (melting point ~3180°C) and superior strength at high temperatures. Critical to aerospace, it reinforces nickel-based superalloys in jet engines and gas turbines, significantly improving efficiency and durability. The petrochemical industry relies on rhenium-based catalysts for cleaner fuel production, while its electrical properties make it indispensable in advanced electronics and semiconductors. It is produced exclusively as a byproduct of molybdenum and copper mining, with 60% of its output coming from Chile.

Chile, not China, leads rhenium supply.

Chile supplied 37% of primary rhenium in 2025. China ranked second at 24.7%, while the United States added about 12%.

Rhenium

Why Invest in Rhenium?

Rhenium matters in aerospace because it helps high-performance turbine engines handle extreme heat. That is the part retail investors sometimes miss. This is not a nice-to-have industrial additive that buyers can swap out next month if the price gets annoying. In the applications that matter most, performance comes first, giving rhenium a kind of pricing power that cheaper bulk commodities usually do not get.

The price backdrop is hard to ignore. Rhenium is up 157% since the start of 2025 and 220% since the start of 2024. As of April 3, 2026, the retail price sits at $6,389.30 per kilogram, putting it in a different category from the industrial metals most people casually follow.

Rhenium has already had a huge run, but there is still a real argument for paying attention in 2026 because demand is tied to actual industrial use, not just speculative excitement. There was also an important policy signal late last year when the USGS added rhenium to its Final 2025 List of Critical Minerals for the first time. Governments do not apply that label lightly. It usually means supply concentration, strategic dependence, or both have gotten hard enough to ignore.

I still think rhenium may be a good investment in 2026 if you approach it as a niche strategic material, not as a momentum toy. Demand is being pulled by aerospace and defense, price strength is already visible, and the US government has now confirmed that the mineral matters enough to classify as critical.

Who produces rhenium?

Approximate share of global primary rhenium mine production - Chile dominates supply, with a handful of byproduct producers in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the United States.
Shares are indicative, based on USGS mine production data around 2013 and later industry commentary. Chile provides around half of global primary rhenium, with most output recovered as a byproduct of large copper-molybdenum operations.

Rhenium Demand and Market Outlook

Aerospace Turbine Demand
Rising
Both Airbus and Boeing project tens of thousands of new aircraft in service by 2035. Analysts estimate that each new jet requires on average 50 kg of rhenium for its turbine engines, implying as much as 1,450 tonnes of rhenium demand by 2033 (around 80–85% of mined rhenium is used in nickel-based superalloys for jet and gas turbines).
Refining & Catalysts
Growing
Rhenium-platinum catalysts remain essential for making high-octane gasoline. As environmental regulations push for cleaner fuels and more efficient refining, demand for rhenium catalysts could grow.
Strategic Stockpiling
Elevated
The United States (2025 list) and several other governments classify rhenium as a critical mineral. This status is prompting strategic stockpiling efforts and long-term securing of supply lines.
Advanced Materials R&D
Emerging
Research into advanced materials – for example, novel biomedical implants and next-generation alloys – is beginning to incorporate rhenium for its durability and stability. Any major breakthrough could create significant new sources of demand.
Market Size & CAGR
+7.85%
The global metal rhenium market size was valued at approximately US$1.4 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach about US$2.6 billion by 2032, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 7.85% over the forecast period.
