Rhodium in detail
Rhodium is a rare, high-value metal. It’s often considered a precious metal, but its core value comes from its wide industrial use due to its superior catalytic properties and exceptional resistance to corrosion and oxidation. Primarily used in automotive catalytic converters, it significantly reduces harmful emissions; improving our environment and earning the title of “the greenest metal.” Rhodium also plays essential roles in chemical production, glass manufacturing, electronics, optics, and luxury jewelry due to its high melting point (~1964°C) and reflective qualities.
Demand for rhodium continues to rise with stricter emission regulations and industrial growth, particularly in emerging markets like China and India. However, supply is limited, as rhodium is obtained only as a byproduct of platinum and palladium mining, mostly from geopolitically unstable regions such as South Africa, Russia, and Zimbabwe. Supply disruptions from power outages, labor issues, and political instability contribute to continued price volatility, making rhodium a highly strategic investment.

Why Invest in Rhodium?
Rhodium is the rarest and most volatile precious metal in commercial production – essential for automotive emissions control, chemical catalysis, and high-temperature industrial applications where no viable substitutes exist.
Yet its supply is brutally constrained, with just 25-30 tonnes produced annually as a byproduct of platinum mining. Over 80% comes from South Africa’s Bushveld Complex, making rhodium acutely vulnerable to geopolitical disruption, power crises, and labor unrest.
The World Platinum Investment Council describes rhodium as “the most supply-inelastic precious metal” – a structural deficit that has driven price swings from $500/oz to over $29,000/oz in the past two decades, with volatility exceeding 300% in single years.

How to Invest in Rhodium
Investing in rhodium presents unique challenges, as this rare metal isn’t commonly available through standard commodity exchanges and lacks widely traded futures contracts. Unlike gold or platinum, there is no accessible spot market, making price discovery dependent on dealer quotes and industrial transactions.
The primary indirect route is through platinum-group metal (PGM) mining companies such as Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum, or Sibanye-Stillwater, which produce rhodium as a minor byproduct (3-8% of PGM basket) of platinum mining. However, their revenues and stock performance are influenced by the entire PGM complex – platinum, palladium, and base metals – rather than rhodium specifically. Moreover, these companies are miners whose share prices reflect operational profitability, South African power grid stability, labor relations, and rand currency movements rather than underlying rhodium holdings.
A single physically-backed ETF exists – the db Physical Rhodium ETC (Xtrackers) – though access remains primarily institutional, with retail availability varying by jurisdiction.
Direct Investment
For direct investment, acquiring high-purity rhodium bars (99.9%+) from specialized dealers provides unhedged exposure to rhodium’s market value. Due to its extreme price volatility (historical swings of 300%+ annually), byproduct supply constraints (25-30 tonnes global production), and concentrated sourcing (80% from South Africa’s Bushveld Complex), professional storage in secure vaults is recommended for safekeeping and eventual liquidation.
As a critical material essential for automotive emission control, chemical catalysis, and electronics applications, rhodium represents a highly speculative, supply-constrained investment opportunity in the precious metals sector.

No metal exists in isolation.
Palladium →
Palladium is a focused way to examine the changing automotive and recycling markets. Its investment case now needs to account for a possible shift out of a long period of annual deficits.
Platinum →
Platinum's appeal centres on constrained supply and a broad set of industrial uses. Repeated annual deficits make stocks worth watching, while recycling, investment flows and demand changes can alter the balance.
Iridium →
Iridium has a role in PEM electrolysers as well as demanding industrial components. Recovery within the wider platinum-group mining chain limits how directly its production can respond to interest in hydrogen technology.
