Key Price Drivers
Automotive Emissions Regulations
Tightening NOx standards globally drive catalytic converter demand where rhodium has no substitute
South Africa Supply Concentration
Over 80% of global supply from one country facing persistent operational disruptions
EV Adoption Risk
Rising battery electric vehicle sales structurally reduce the addressable autocatalyst market long-term
Extreme Price Volatility
Tiny annual supply below 30 tonnes makes rhodium highly sensitive to demand shifts

Rhodium Price Trends & Forecast
Rhodium’s price history is one of the most dramatic in the entire metals complex. The metal peaked at nearly $29,800 per ounce in March 2021, a level driven by a perfect combination of emission regulation tightening, South African supply disruptions, and a near-complete absence of substitutes for NOx reduction in catalytic converters. What followed was an equally sharp correction. By late 2024, rhodium had stabilized between $4,400 and $4,750 per ounce – a collapse of over 80% from the peak.
The rebound since then has been sharp. Rhodium closed 2025 up 94.72% at $316.42 per gram, and is up a further 11% year-to-date in 2026, supported by production disruptions at South African mines, Anglo American Platinum actively buying metal, and strong automotive sales in both the US and China.

Looking ahead, the picture is more mixed than for other PGMs. Heraeus Precious Metals forecasts that rhodium could move from a small deficit into a small surplus in 2026, with automotive demand falling around 5% as ICE and hybrid vehicle market share continues to decline. Prices are expected to range between $6,000 and $9,000 per ounce. Slower than expected EV adoption in Europe or the US remains the main upside scenario, as it would support additional gasoline vehicle production and rhodium demand.
The broader rhodium market is projected to grow from $3.19 billion in 2025 to nearly $5 billion by 2033, but the near-term price path is more dependent on the pace of EV transition than on any supply-side factor.
