Tellurium

Why Invest in Tellurium?

Tellurium is a rare metalloid critical for cadmium telluride thin-film solar panels – 55% of new US solar installations – and bismuth telluride thermoelectric devices for waste heat recovery. Secondary uses include machinability additives in steel and copper alloys, semiconductors and specialty optics. Production depends almost entirely on copper refining, with over 90% recovered as byproduct from electrolytic anode slimes. China controls 67-76% of refined output and critical downstream processing. China imposed export controls on tellurium and cadmium telluride in February 2025, adding immediate supply risk.

Who produces tellurium?

Approximate share of global refined tellurium output. Tellurium is mostly recovered as a byproduct of copper refining, and refined supply is heavily concentrated in China with a handful of other copper smelting countries providing the balance.
USGS Minerals Yearbook and Mineral Commodity Summaries data show that China accounted for about 65% of refined tellurium output in 2022 and roughly 75% in 2024. Russia and Japan are the next largest producers, and smaller volumes are refined in countries such as Canada, Sweden, Peru, the United States and Bulgaria. Shares outside China vary year to year and the non-China percentages here are rounded estimates for illustrative purposes, preserving Russia and Japan as the main secondary producers.
