Rare earth

TerbiumA specialised addition to demanding magnets.

Terbium can improve the high-temperature performance of neodymium-based magnets. Its supply story is closely linked to heavy rare-earth separation and the material specifications of magnet manufacturers.

Terbium in detail

Terbium is a critical rare earth element vital for enhancing high-performance permanent magnets, enabling the durability and efficiency of electric vehicle (EV) motors, wind turbines, and advanced aerospace technologies. Its unique ability to improve thermal stability in neodymium-based magnets makes it indispensable in high-temperature applications, defense systems, and cutting-edge electronics.

Demand for terbium is rising with the expansion of green energy and electric mobility, yet its supply is severely limited, with over 95% controlled by China. Geopolitical risks, supply bottlenecks, and export restrictions drive extreme price volatility, solidifying terbium’s role as a strategically important and highly valuable investment in the rare earth market.

Material supply at a glanceChecked through 30 August 2026

The only published current non-China figure is 62 tonnes for dysprosium and terbium combined.

Lynas reports dysprosium and terbium together, so the terbium amount is unknown. Four projects publish 235 tonnes a year of separate terbium capacity, but on different schedules.

Terbium

Why Invest in Terbium?

Terbium is one of those niche materials that rarely gets much attention until a government decision turns it into a pricing event. That is basically what happened in 2025, when China put export controls on seven heavy rare earths, terbium included. Anyone shipping Chinese-origin rare earth materials now needs a MOFCOM license, and every time I read that sort of language I translate it the same way: shipments get messier, delays show up faster, prices usually follow.

That is exactly what happened here. Terbium went from $1,396.50 per kilogram in January to $3,484.50 per kilogram at internal resale levels after the stop-start export policy and the October tightening. That is not a mild commodity bounce. It is more like watching something move from expensive industrial input to strategic bottleneck in a matter of months.

That is what makes the 2026 case interesting. Supply is concentrated, policy risk is real, and the market has already had a reminder that Beijing is willing to use both. Terbium is also tied to technologies with genuine industrial demand behind them, which matters far more than a purely speculative story.

For me, that is the key point. This is not just a chart moving for no reason. It is a small, strategically important market where supply is tightly controlled, demand still has real industrial backing, and prices have already shown how quickly they can respond when export restrictions start to bite. That does not make terbium a sure thing, but it does make it one of the more credible rare earth stories to watch in 2026.

Terbium Demand and Price Forecast

🏧
EU Magnet Demand Forecast
10x by 2050
The EU projects that demand for rare earth magnets - which rely on dysprosium and terbium for heat-resistant performance - could increase tenfold by 2050 as electrification and clean energy deployment accelerate across the bloc.
📈
McKinsey Demand Triple
176,000t by 2035
A McKinsey study forecasts global demand for magnet rare earths will triple, from 59,000 tonnes in 2022 to around 176,000 tonnes by 2035, driven by booming EV and wind markets where terbium plays a critical role in high-temperature magnet performance.
Supply Shortfall Risk
60,000t Gap by 2035
Supply is struggling to keep up - surging magnet demand could lead to a 60,000 tonne shortfall (about 30% of requirements) by 2035 without new sources or substitutes coming online in time.
🚫
Severe Deficit Scenarios
Up to 256% of Supply
One analysis warns that under rapid clean-energy adoption scenarios, terbium requirements could reach 134-256% of available supply, signalling severe deficits unless recycling programmes and new mines come online at scale.
💵
Rare Earth Market Size
+6% CAGR
The global rare earth metals market (including terbium) is forecast to grow from about $5.1 billion in 2024 to $7.4 billion by 2030, reflecting a roughly 6% CAGR as high-tech demand outpaces limited supply.

How to Invest in Terbium

Investing in Terbium presents unique challenges, as it is not traded on major commodity exchanges and lacks standardised futures contracts.

Unlike gold or silver, there is no widely available spot market, making price discovery opaque.

The most popular way to try and gain exposure is through publicly traded rare earth mining companies such as Lynas Rare Earths and MP Materials, which produce terbium as part of a broader rare earth mix. However, their revenues are influenced by the entire rare earth market rather than terbium specifically.

Moreover, these companies are miners whose stock price is a function of their profitability rather than underlying assets.

Direct Invest

For direct investment, acquiring high-purity terbium oxide or metal from specialised dealers is an option. Due to its strategic importance, limited supply, and price volatility, professional storage in secure vaults is recommended for safekeeping and resale.

As a critical material essential for high-performance magnets, defense applications, and green technology, terbium represents a compelling, though highly specialised, investment opportunity in the rare earth sector.
